2021 Ram 1500 Gets Long-Awaited TRX Model

Dodge Ram 1500 is now the second best-selling model in the truck segment. FCA moved past Chevy and its Silverado in 2019 after many upgrades we saw on their half-ton pickup. Well, General Motors is not giving up. It will be hard to maintain the position, so the new 2021 Ram 1500 has to continue the evolution.

There are a few options. Since the styling is fresh, we won’t see too big cosmetic changes. Like always, the truckmaker will launch a couple of special editions with unique themes. But, we are eagerly expecting one model – the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. This is the performance-oriented off-road monster that is getting power from a 6.2-liter supercharged engine. Besides this one, Dodge Ram truck is dropping the TR concept.

The edition with the most powerful output is not the only one that draws attention. A V6 features the eTorque mild-hybrid system, which is the first step in complete electrification. Well, we will see a classic hybrid truck before the EV happens. Plus, there are more powerful V8 units, 5.7 and 6.4 available for upgrades. Finally, the pickup made a noise when it stole the show from competitors in Detroit, launching a diesel engine back in 2018.

All in all, the 2021 Ram 1500 deserved the place behind the untouchable Ford F-150. Now, when the FCA finally launched the TRX model, fans can expect the response for the Raptor edition.

Biggest Change for the New Season – the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX

The TRX concept is not so fresh anymore. Off-road enthusiasts were waiting eagerly and it is finally happening. Besides the concept, the company hinted at it a few times. The last time we saw the clock in the diesel model debut in 2018, set at 7:07. Well, engineers downtuned the output to 702 horsepower for the truck. The same engine will be under the hood of the Dodger Durango SRT Hellcat and make it the most powerful SUV with 710 ponies.

A 6.2-liter supercharged V8 was available only for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Challenger. Tuned as the “Demon”, the engine delivers 797 hp. Well, even 702 ponies are making the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX the most powerful truck in the market, without any competition. Ford F-150 Raptor can produce ‘only’ 450 hp.

No TR Model, FCA Prepares Special Editions

Besides the TRX, the FCA is keeping the rest of the lineup for the 2021 Ram 1500. The base version is Tradesman. Big Horn and Laramie are the mid-range offer, while the Ram 1500 Rebel is a model for light off-road duties. We expected to see something meaner and experts were mentioning the TR package with a 6.4-liter engine. This is not going to happen with the powerful TRX coming out. Two premium trucks are Laramie Longhorn and Limited, whose price is starting above $50,000.

Like always, Dodge Ram is going to deliver a few special editions. Themes for 2021 are unknown at the moment. During the last couple of years, we could see Kentucky Derby, Black Edition, or Mojave Sand (also available for Ram 2500 Power Wagon). You couldn’t miss the pickup when Hydro Blue, Ignition Orange, or Sublime Greed packages are added. Classic Warlock, Night Edition, or Rodeo versions are also some of the themes you can find on this truck in 2019/2020.

2021 Ram 1500 Engines: V6, V8, Diesel

Under the bonnet of the 2021 Ram 1500 is a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine as the entry-level powerplant. With 305 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, it won’t meet requirements for serious towing. On the other hand, if you don’t need high hauling capabilities, then a V6 will save you fuel. Also, the base price is way more affordable.

A 5.7-liter V8 is a serious upgrade. The pickup truck now offers 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, which is enough for 12,750 pounds of towing capacity. This number could go up if the company decides to add a larger 6.4-liter V8 Hemi engine and the SRT package. Outputs of this one go up to 475 hp and engineers might tune it to 500 ponies if FCA decides to give a green light to the 2021 Ram 1500 TR model eventually.

Diesel is the most interesting setup for the truck. A 3.0-liter EcoDiesel configuration is returning 480 lb-ft and 260 horsepower. At the same time, it improves the towing capacity to 12,560 pounds and its fuel economy reaches 32 mpg on the open road. We already mentioned the Hellcat engine. Its towing capabilities are unknown yet. All engines are mated to an eight-speed gearbox.

Prices Bump, TRX Will Cost $70,000

The company announced the pricing only for the new 2021 Ram 1500 TRX model. Its MSRP is $70,095 and goes up by $12,150 if you want the Launch Edition upgrades. There are also two other packages available for the new version – Level 1 ($3,420) and Level 2 ($7,920). We also expect a few minor changes on other versions as well. These will make the price of the base Tradesman model go up, getting closer to $34,000. You can always build up the truck with a V8 or diesel engine, 4×4 drive, and various other cab and bed layouts.
