Mitsubishi is using different names for its pickup truck. Let’s say it is Triton since the Japanese company is selling it under this name in the homeland. For most, but not all, export markets, you will find the L200 as the pickup with the Mitsubishi’s badge. On rare occasions, fans can spot badges such as Barbarian or Strakar. It was a close relative to Fiat Fullback, and many years ago, the model was even available in the US, as the Ram 50. Now, the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton is ready to bring the new generation, first in Japan, and then for all other nameplates.
The Japanese company is part of the big alliance with Nissan and Renault. We can find similarities between many of the trucks from these three manufacturers. Well, Navara is the most popular vehicle in this class and serves as the base for 2021 Mitsubishi Triton and Renault Alaskan. The L200 also served as the inspiration for Fiat Fullback. The Italian company reached an agreement with Japanese partners, but their project was not successful.
The 2021 Mitsubishi Triton will be an all-new truck. Nissan Navara, and its US sibling Frontier, are coming redesigned. The new L200 will also go through a revisit and we can expect the new look. Also, greener engines are the priority for the alliance that sold the most all-electric vehicles ever.
Powertrains: Can 2021 Mitsubishi Triton Become Hybrid?
We are yet to see a hybrid pickup in production. Ram 1500 has a mild-hybrid system, but it is far away from a configuration we expect to see. It will be easier to develop such a powerplant for the mid-size truck, rather than the full-size. Although the market is the biggest in the US, models from outside North America could introduce a hybrid first.
Still, the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton before Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, or VW Amarok? Even Nissan Navara? Well, the alliance is big and the leading seller of all-electric vehicles. So, we cannot write any of the carmakers from this group from being the first to bring a hybrid truck. Nissan is a favorite, without a doubt. But, Mitsubishi already made a stunning move with the Outlander PHEV crossover. It might not be powerful, with only 115 hp, but the emissions are the lowest on its system. This gives a boost to the Japanese carmaker to bring more hybrids, including a pickup truck. It is a more complicating task, but experts think Mitsubishi is capable of making a stunning move.
Diesel and Petrol Units
Even if a hybrid happens, it will be an optional upgrade and buyers will be careful with the new technology. Another reason why we see this as the radical move is that Triton’s most popular models are using a diesel engine. For the UK and Europe, there is a 2.3-liter inline-four turbodiesel, while Asian and Australian markets are using a 2.4-liter displacement. A 2.4-liter gasoline powerplant is an option, but truckers are not keen on this one.
The smaller block is producing 145 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It is good for the maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds. Four-wheel drive is optional. In Asia and Australia, buyers can get 180 hp and 320 lb-ft.
The current generation arrived in 2015. Last year brought a few changes on the front fascia inspired by the latest Pajero SUV. The redesign of the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton will make the truck more aggressive and appealing. The Japanese company is growing again and becomes one of the major players in the market. The L200 was always very popular among truckers.
Different options will make it even more convenient. First of all, Mitsubishi is offering a 7-year warranty. It is better than many other rival companies and their 5-year coverage. Plus, you will be able to select different options. In some markets, the vehicle is available with a chassis cab. Nevertheless, the pickup truck comes with a couple of cab styles and bed lengths.
But, the Triton and L200 are going to need a serious overhaul of the interior to provide more comfort, and what is more important – modern infotainment features. Premium trim levels will definitely lure more buyers and leather seats are always popular. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are already available. The company is developing a new generation of the Mitsubishi Connect system, but the release date is not set yet. The big redesign of the L200 could introduce the new multimedia.
When Will 2021 Mitsubishi Triton Be Available?
The 2021 Mitsubishi Triton was supposed to be the all-new vehicle, but the coronavirus pandemic put the question mark over its arrival. According to some sources, the truck might be delayed for 2022 YM. Well, it would give extra time to designers and engineers to develop and test new features. A hybrid version is going to debut after the base one. Even as a model for 2022, the pickup will debut in the first half of the next season.
