Like many other vehicles in the GM portfolio, Colorado truck faced a delay in development and production. We expected to see it the next-gen truck coming as the 2022 YM, but it is now under the question mark. A few vehicles that were ready to debut last season as models for this year were postponed. It would be too much to see so many GM updates. On the other hand, the 2022 Chevy Colorado is one of the most important vehicles and it definitely needs a revisit to stay competitive.
The mid-size truck market is alive again. Jeep and Ford returned to the game. Gladiator and Ranger are making an immediate impact. Colorado is still the best-seller, and arguably the No1 pickup truck in the US dealerships. But, the competition is very strong. A couple of years ago, only Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma could keep pace with the Chevrolet’s truck. Now, there are more rivals on the way, including Hyundai Santa Cruz and Kia Pickup Truck.
One of the reasons why we are not sure about the 2022 Chevy Colorado redesign, is the focus on electrification. General Motors is adding another model to the pickup class. The company purchased a famous Hummer nameplate, and the GM is reusing it for the electric pickup scheduled for 2022. With this one and a few other big projects, we are not so sure the carmaker will have time and resources to continue the development of the all-new Colorado.
2022 Chevy Colorado Redesign
There are a lot of factors the redesign depends on. The truck is popular and it still keeps excellent resale value. General Motors has other segments where the company and its products are not standing well. It seems like a priority to improve the presence in more markets, rather than spend big on the flagship models. The redesign would cement the place of the 2022 Chevy Colorado as the top American truck and then there will be a lot of time for fixing issues in other classes.
The coronavirus outburst spoiled GM plans. More than two years ago, sources from the company confirmed that bosses are keen on the next-gen 2022 Chevy Colorado. With so many losses and uncertainty, we can hope that the development is in the stage where there is no going back. The GMC Canyon is on the same route.
Diesel Engine, Electric Truck
One of the things that made the 2022 Chevy Colorado so special was the diesel powerplant. A 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-four mill is returning 370 pound-feet of torque. Colorado was a leader in towing capacity in the mid-size segment since no other truck could haul more than 7,700 pounds. Others are getting closed and FCA is using a larger unit from the half-ton segment to beat the record. Also, the oil-burner is fuel-friendlier than all petrol options.
However, it is going to change. General Motors is a bit late in electrification stories, but better that way than never. The first electric units were announced (GMC Hummer electric truck, Cadillac Lyriq EV SUV, and Chevy Bolt EUV). There will be more releases, especially with lighter, hybrid configurations. Since the Hummer is becoming all-electric, we expect the mid-size 2022 Chevrolet Colorado to get a sort of mild-hybrid powerplant that will increase the mileage and power.
Best Model: 2022 Chevy Colorado ZR2
When speaking about the truck, one of the synonyms is the ZR2 package. Mid-size pickups are heavily used for off-road adventures. Its quality build, sustainability and powerful engines will impress more than any other type of vehicle. Then, truckmakers figured out that maximizing the off-road performance is an investment. Now, every model has special 4×4 equipment. The 2022 Chevy Colorado ZR2 will face Tacoma TRD Pro, Frontier Pro-4X, Ranger Raptor, and Gladiator Rubicon in the market.
Nevertheless, we are giving the most chances to GM’s truck. Even if the pickup is not redesigned, the performance section will update the ZR2 package with new, cool options. Of course, unique shocks and suspension setup is the priority. Then, buyers will get bedliner, features that will help access the bed, off-road tires, skid plates, and many other options.
The 2022 Chevy Colorado ZR2 also updates the cabin and color palette. Inside, we will find some of the most advanced technology the company is using. Still, this is going to be an off-road ride, not the premium edition with high-end gadgets and luxury parts. Three colors were added for the 2021 season (Sand Dune Metallic, Bright Blue Metallic and Cherry Red Tintcoat). More paintjobs are coming with the 2022 YM.
2022 Chevy Colorado Release Date
With all the things happening around us, it is really hard to say when to expect the next-gen truck. The initial plan is rescheduled and development has started. But, when it will end, we can only hope that during next season the all-new 2022 Chevy Colorado is going to debut.
