2024 GMC Canyon AT4X is the Most Capable Canyon

Those who love off-road-oriented trucks are going to love the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X. It has been quite a while since we saw the last revision of the famous Canyon. Its design and idea became stale, and so the sales dropped. Redesigns happen quite often nowadays. For this reason, manufacturers need to keep their trucks up to date.

The famous AT4X trim is all about the off-roading aspect of driving. So, this means that the Canyon is about to receive an update to make it more versatile. Perhaps new suspension, new powertrain. We will definitely get a new interior since the old one is ancient. Let’s take a look at what the new AT4X might look like.

Interior Upgrades

Expect a redesigned interior for the new 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X. This means improved seating with better upholstery. Hopefully, no more leather. This isn’t the best material for harsh weather conditions, especially off-road. More cushioning is needed in order to make the ride enjoyable.

This cabin can fit five people without any issues. Infotainment is a touchscreen of 13 inches in size. The Dashboard will be fully digital, which is a nice step towards the future. Perhaps GMC could throw in the hands-free driving software. This will help people relax but not sleep behind the wheel. We aren’t sure how well it will work off the main roads.

GMC Canyon AT4X Design and Off-Road Features

On the outside, it looks to stay true to its predecessor. Hopefully, the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X keeps its aggressive and sturdy look. As we mentioned, ride height has been improved for better clearance. Under armor skids are available to protect the underside from obstacles. Approach angles for bumpers are fixed.

There will be hook and winch capabilities. The cargo bed is a standard 5.5 feet. The front fascia is huge and mean-looking. There is a big chrome mesh with GMC lettering. Headlights have a classic square look with bright LED lights. Since it is an off-roading version, perhaps an extra LED bar on top of the truck would be a good idea.

Engine Specs

The off-roading truck needs to be capable and sturdy. Therefore, GMC will use only the tried and tested engines for the upcoming redesign. The new 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X will continue with the old reliable. It is a 2.7-liter, four-cylinder engine. But it does come with different outputs. Of course, the power output will be dictated by the trim you opt for. But the basic trim will produce around 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

There will be no more diesel versions due to emission problems. Perhaps GMC decides to bring back the 3.6-liter V6 and the 2.5-liter I4 LCV gasoline engines. The Canyon recently received an update platform-wise. It is changed for future purposes. This might indicate that they are planning a hybrid version. This would make perfect sense as new emission regulations are coming in and they need to look ahead. The new platform is called GM 31XX-2. The architecture is sturdy and durable and puts the front fascia at a different angle.

By doing this, the truck received a bit of ground clearance as well. A hybrid version with a dual electric motor would be the best option. This way, the engine receives less stress and will last longer. Also, an electric motor for each axle means more power and better torque. Something you’ll want if you go off-road frequently. This also helps with fuel economy greatly. Currently, full electrification is not in the works. But, perhaps the next redesign might mandate it. A battery pack of no less than 150 kWh would be enough. This would give it a similar power output with at least 300 miles of range. We are unsure why GMC didn’t jump on the electric train yet.

Fuel Economy is Decent

The 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X isn’t too expensive to run considering the power you get. You can count on getting around 26 mpg combined when driving. This number would be much better if there was a hybrid powertrain.

2024 GMC Canyon AT4X Cost and Release Date

We don’t expect the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X to come any sooner than the summer of 2023. The starting price is estimated at around $4000 for the basic trim. This will increase with the more amenities you choose. The Canyon AT4X’s main rival is the new Ford Ranger.
